I'm honored and excited that I was invited to be a DragonCon panelist on “Hallowed Halls & Twisted Magic: Dark Academia” on the DragonCon Urban Fantasy Track (Friday 9/1/23 at 10 am). I've made lots of notes this weekend about Dark Academia literature, movies, and TV series I love. Also making notes about the differences between non-supernatural Dark Academia (like The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Shadow of the Lions by Christopher Swann, the movie Kill Your Darlings, and the E.M. Forster novel and movie Maurice) and supernatural Dark Academia (like Fraternity by Andy Mientus, Ghosts of Harvard by Francesca Serritella, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, and the novels & TV series Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and A Discovery of Witches). I will try not to be too excited and fanboyish when I'm on the panel at DragonCon, but it will be difficult!

Imposter syndrome is violence today.

I have to write an application for summer school at Harvard (I don't think I will get in (not being self-deprecating, this is /gen), but my advisor said to apply so here we are). Every time I open the application to start working on it I just freeze like it's going to bite me and think I'm going to get in trouble for applying for some reason. Is this what academia is. Unhand me.

A devoted birdwatcher who landed a show on National Geographic after making headlines during a racial profiling incident has turned his fame into an Emmy Award after overcoming adversity.

It’s a beautiful culmination of four years of creative work spawned in the wake of the “Central Park Karen” incident, that has seen Mr. Christian Cooper produce a book, television show, and graphic novel series.

To readers for whom the 24-hour news cycle has swept this story under the rug, in 2020 Christian Cooper was in a wooded area of NYC’s Central Park called The Ramble, enjoying his lifelong passion for birdwatching when a woman threatened to call 911 on him after he asked her to put her dog back on its leash, as per the park rules.

Becoming irate, the woman called the police and said there was an African-American man threatening her life, all while the Harvard-educated Cooper recorded the dreadful stunt on his smartphone.

On June 8th, he became a Daytime Emmy Award winner in the Outstanding Daytime Personality category for his show, Extraordinary Birder, which took viewers all over the Western Hemisphere exploring the nature and character of birds and Cooper’s lifelong hobby.

With birding rapidly advancing on his old career as a writer, for which he contributed to the Marvel universe, he combined the two in order to produce the critically acclaimed Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World, published by Penguin-Random House.

Hasty Pudding Man of the Year 2023 Wrap Up

I was thrilled when it was announced Hasty Pudding Theatricals of Harvard University’s 2023 Man of the Year was Bob Odenkirk, one of my favorite actors working today. Just last week I named the final season of his series Better Call Saul my #1 TV Show of 2022. So I was super excited to get the chance to cover this event, which is right down the street from me.

At Farkas Hall, in front of an audience, Odenkirk came out and was roasted by the members of Hasty Pudding Theatrical. Some of the jokes were funny, but a few were groaners, i.e. a number of jokes about his thinning hair and puns about his movie Nobody. But more than anything, it was fun because Odenkirk and the cast members all seemed to be having a good time. Then they brought out the Pudding Pot and Odenkirk read a funny speech (the highlight of the whole ceremony) where he read his margin notes “accidentally”. There’s a reason this guy was a writer on SNL, The Ben Stiller Show, The Dana Carvey Show, Mr. Show, and Tenacious D.

Following the ceremony, Odenkirk did a press conference. He was very appreciative and humbled by the honor. He spoke about the joy he gets out of mixing it up: writing, acting, and then producing, but also doing an action movie and following that up with a comedy. He mentioned his upcoming AMC TV series Lucky Hank, which is lighter and funnier than Better Call Saul. He was asked about this honor coming a year and a half after his heart attack and he said how appreciative he is of this honor now. He also mentioned he has a book coming out in the Fall with his daughter. When asked about advice for anyone starting in showbiz he said “You got to put out your best energy, but you have to read the room too”. Well put!
